Choosing the Right Pool Heater for Your Home

Written on: May 18, 2026

Swim Longer & Stay Comfortable

A pool heater can dramatically extend your swimming season and keep water temperatures comfortable, typically between 78–82°F. That’s especially useful during the spring months when it can be warm one day and chilly the next.

Beyond comfort, a propane pool heater adds flexibility. You can swim earlier in spring and later into fall. The key is choosing the right heater for your home, climate, and budget.

Types of Pool Heaters

There are four main types of pool heaters, each with distinct advantages:

1. Propane Pool Heaters: Propane pool heaters are known for their speed. They can heat pool water quickly and work efficiently even in colder weather (an important consideration in our region). They are ideal for homeowners who want on-demand heating or only use their pool occasionally.
2. Heat Pump Pool Heaters: Heat pumps use electricity to pull heat from the air and transfer it into your pool. They can be highly energy-efficient—often delivering several times more heat energy than the electricity they consume. However, they heat water more slowly than propane pool heaters and are better suited for homeowners in regions with more moderate climates than the Hudson Valley.
3. Solar Pool Heaters: Solar systems use the sun’s energy to warm your pool water. They have the lowest operating costs and are environmentally friendly. The tradeoff is that their performance depends heavily on sunlight exposure, and heating happens gradually rather than instantly.
4. Electric Resistance Heaters: These heaters use electric elements to generate heat. While they are compact and affordable upfront, they are typically the most expensive to operate and are best suited for smaller pools or spas.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Pool Heater

Selecting the right pool heater involves more than just picking a type. You should also consider the following important factors:

• Climate: Colder regions like ours often benefit from propane heaters, while warmer climates are ideal for heat pumps or solar systems.
• Pool Size: Larger pools require higher BTU output to heat efficiently.
• Usage Habits: Frequent swimmers may prefer energy-efficient systems, while occasional users may prioritize quick heating.
• Budget: Factor in both installation and long-term operating costs—not just the upfront price.

Installation and Professional Guidance

Proper installation is essential for the performance, safety, and longevity of your pool heater. A pool heater must be correctly sized, connected to utilities, and integrated with your pool system.
