Don’t Let Record High Prices Break Your Budget!

home energy tips new yorkThe past few months have brought a lot of financial struggles with them. Supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine have caused the price of everything from eggs to bacon to gas to heating oil to rise. Inflation is breaking records. Everywhere you look it seems things are getting more expensive.

We know our customers are looking for ways to lower their costs. And now that June is here, you’re going to be looking for ways to stay cool in your Hudson Valley home when the temps start to really rise. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to save money on your energy bills while keeping cool this season.

Money Saving Tips for AC Users

Want to stay cool and comfortable in your home without making your energy bills skyrocket? Here are five tips for lowering your energy bills:

  1. Almost 30% of the unwanted heat in your home comes through the windows. Closing the curtains or using shades during daylight hours can reduce the load on your AC. You can also make your home more energy efficient by caulking windows, installing door sweeps, and adding insulation. This will also save you money on your heating bills during the winter!
  2. Avoid running heat-generating appliances inside your home. Take advantage of the sun and save money by drying your clothes outside on a line. Now is also a great time to power up your BBQ grill. And Downey Energy provides convenient BBQ grill tank exchange and refills.
  3. Since hot air rises, move your mattress to the floor or a lower level of your home. You can also use breathable cotton sheets and buckwheat pillows to stay cooler at night.
  4. Use a programmable thermostat and set it to let your home warm up during those hours when the house will be empty or you and your family are asleep. For each degree higher you go, you could save 3% to 5% a day on your AC bills.
  5. Routinely change the air filters on your AC. A clogged air filter will reduce your AC’s efficiency. You should check them monthly and change or clean them according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Downey Energy is the Hudson Valley’s leader in reliable propane and heating oil delivery

Contact us today to learn more or to request a delivery.

We know many of you are looking at the energy cost increases and wondering when this will end, and we don’t blame you. Our goal is to keep you in the loop as much as possible, even though the situation remains very fluid.

Last week, our suppliers again raised prices by over 65 cents per gallon over a few days. The reasons are complicated and seem to be affecting heating oil and diesel fuel much more than gasoline.

The driving factor is that both heating oil and diesel fuel–pretty much the same thing–are in abnormally short supply now. In fact, if you look at prices on the commodities exchanges, they show heating oil at a dollar less than we can get it at! That never happens. It’s called “basis blowout” and reflects a disconnect between the markets and actual supplies.

Propane Customers Are Still Vulnerable Too

Our propane customers have been feeling the pain too, although price swings have not been as erratic as what we’re seeing right now with heating oil and diesel. Since propane is a by-product of both crude oil and natural gas, rising prices for these two fuels have a ripple effect on propane and drive its price upward.

Inflation has raised its ugly head too, as the actual cost of delivering fuel has risen. Long-time factors that have always influenced where propane prices go include supply-and-demand balance, transportation bottlenecks, energy policy and other issues.

Good News and Bad News about Heating Oil

The good news is that the supply issues are happening because the markets expect heating oil to go lower by a fair amount over the next several months. Fuel suppliers are reluctant to purchase fuel now and get stuck with higher-priced product. The bad news is that it is causing prices to be artificially higher now, and no one really knows for sure what will happen with the Ukraine war. The war is also causing a historic amount of diesel fuel to be shipped to Europe, which is impacting heating oil as well. By the way, we are seeing the same kind of surges in natural gas and electric costs.

What we are doing about it

We decided to hold off most deliveries except for those who seemed to be running low. It didn’t help that we’ve had an unusually cold spring, and people needed to use their heat longer than normal.

Beyond that, we want to urge people to get on our Budget Plan program, which allows us to spread your fuel payments over 10 months, beginning in September. If prices do stay high next year, it will be much easier to manage your bills if you don’t have to pay for all of your deliveries in just five months of fall and winter.

There is no way of knowing whether prices will rise or fall going forward. However, we will do our best to keep you in the loop as things emerge.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call our office. We are here for you.

Shocking Spike in Fuel Prices

Unsurprisingly, we’ve been getting many calls around two connected issues: the surge in fuel prices and supply concerns. People are astounded by how much prices have risen and how fast. So are we. They are also concerned that there will be interruptions in supply that will cause them to run out of fuel.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine shocked energy markets, sending crude oil to record territory and spiking all energy prices. We’ve had increases from our heating oil suppliers of over $1.25 per gallon in less than a week. Propane prices have been better but still increased over 40 cents per gallon. And the situation remains very fluid.

What’s Coming Next?

We don’t know where things will go from here. One thing we can tell you is that we hate this as much as you do. Some people are under the misconception that when prices rise, we make more money. The opposite is true. People cut back usage. They have trouble paying their bills, and our receivables skyrocket. Meanwhile, we must pay our suppliers in just ten days. We must borrow much more from the bank. It is an awful mess for everyone.

One thing you can count on is that we will not let you run out. We have been in business for many years and have very strong relationships with suppliers and financial institutions. We are already getting calls from customers who are with other companies that can’t say the same. These customers are unable to get deliveries for 20 days out. You don’t have to worry about that with us.

If you are having trouble paying your bill, talk to us before it becomes a problem. Many times, we can work out something to give you more time, especially if you’ve been with us a while. We can also set you up on a monthly payment plan.

Nothing will make us happier than when prices start dropping. Until then, trust us to look out for you, and let’s pray for the people of Ukraine.

Downey Energy Installs & Services Well Pumps

well pump repair new yorkDowney Energy isn’t just the Hudson Valley’s leader for reliable propane and heating oil delivery. We also install, maintain, and repair equipment, including:

Well Pumps: We’ll Make Sure You Have Water

If you’re one of our many customers who live in a remote location in the Hudson Valley, you may not have the benefit of a public water supply. Your home, farm, or business might rely on a well for water. If that’s the case, Downey Energy is here for you. We sell, install, maintain, and repair well pumps. We also perform well pump conversions.

How Well Pumps Work

Well pumps perform an essential function. They are how water gets from your well to the pressure tank that provides water for your home or business. When your tank needs more water, the pressure switch signals the well pump to send water from the well. Once there’s enough water (pressure), the switch then signals the well pump to turn off.

Quality Products & Service

Downey Energy is proud to install Goulds submersible well pumps. They have state-of-the-art mechanics and smart technology integration. So if you need your well pump replaced, come to Downey Energy.

Downey Energy also provides well pump maintenance and repairs. In fact, all of our service trucks are equipped with a full inventory of replacement parts. Why Did the Price of Oil Get So High?

heating oil prices new yorkIf you keep up with the news, you know that from Covid to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are changing at a rapid pace. It’s a challenging time for all of us, especially as current events are causing volatility in the cost of heating oil in New York and across America. When the price of oil rises, it hurts us all—even those of us who are in the business of selling it.

Understanding the Energy Markets and Price Fluctuations

Global crude oil prices soared to over $100 per barrel for the first time in eight years after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. As you probably know all too well by now, the price of crude oil goes is linked to the price you pay for gasoline, heating oil, and the many other products.
This is unwelcomed news to those of us already exhausted after two years of surviving a pandemic. Prior to this, energy prices in all sectors—oil, propane, natural gas and electricity—had been on a steady rise because global oil production hadn’t yet caught up with the pent-up demand that quickly followed the perceived end of the pandemic.

Even before the war in Ukraine accelerated price increases to an even greater degree, frenetic consumer spending—combined with persistent supply shortages—had already sent inflation rates in our country to their highest level in 40 years.

Why Is Oil Supply Still Lagging?

You’ll hear some pundits and politicians in the U.S. assert that “we just have to drill for more oil at home.” That’s a simplified and misinformed solution to the production shortfall.

Investors know that a zero-carbon emissions world is not too far off in our future. Big money is holding back on fossil fuel investments as legislators try to move the country toward more renewable energy. Investors are looking to sink their money into long-term, profitable opportunities in the burgeoning green energy field.

Local heating oil dealers like us are making excellent progress with making our fuel more dependent on renewable energy too. Click here to read about our Bioheat® fuel.

Another factor influencing oil companies is what happened in the spring of 2020 when crude oil prices fell all the way to negative $30 per barrel. Traders had to pay buyers to take oil! Since then, however, prices have been rising steadily. And then they exploded in late February after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But, proving just how much and how quickly things can change, crude oil prices have dropped under $100 per barrel again (as of mid-March). This was caused by a variety of factors, including the unexpected Covid-19 lockdowns in China, small signs of a possible diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict, and the biggest drop in four years of “bullish bets” on the market by hedgers.

To say that we are currently in the midst of an extremely volatile energy market would be an understatement.

    Russia’s Role

Russia is a large factor in all of this because it is the third-largest petroleum and liquid fuels producer in the world (behind only the United States and Saudi Arabia). It’s a major exporter of both crude oil and natural gas.

For weeks, energy prices had been rising in anticipation of the sanctions that were likely to be levied on the Russian energy sector if the country invaded Ukraine. In the frenzied world of investment, this is known as the “fear factor.” Even the hint of a possible disruption in energy supply influences how commodities traders buy and sell.

After Russia invaded, the U.S. was the first country to place a ban on Russian imported oil and petroleum products, which amounted to about 7% of U.S. imports in 2020. In comparison, Canada ranked number one with 52% of petroleum imports, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

But here’s where the fear factor comes in again. While Russian oil imported into the U.S. accounts for just a few drops in the barrel, so to speak, the prospect of Europe eventually joining the U.S. in banning Russian energy imports would leave a big void to fill, and those who make their living in the oil markets don’t like that uncertainty. This includes the speculators who are betting on price moves as well as the hedgers, who are limiting risk for their clients who are involved with either the production or consumption of oil.

    What Comes Next?

We don’t know where things will go from here, but we hope this spike is only temporary. Nothing will make us happier than when the world is a more peaceful place and heating oil prices return to normal. Until then, we will continue to serve you and look out for your interests as our customer.

Downey Energy has been serving residential and commercial clients in the Hudson Valley for over 100 years. In that time, we have survived many ups and downs.
