Propane gas is one of the safest fuels around – but that doesn’t mean you can take propane safety for granted when using it this summer.

Here are five safety tips for your propane-powered home:

  1. Have your propane appliances inspected – Summer is a great time to have your propane equipment inspected, maintained, and repaired by a professional – especially equipment that isn’t being used now, but will get a heavy workout in the fall and winter.
  2. Install / test propane gas and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors – These inexpensive devices will further protect your family. Follow manufacturer instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance – and don’t forget your legal obligations as a NY State homeowner (see section R313.4)! Read more about carbon monoxide safety here.
  3. Operate your outdoor grill safely – There’s nothing like a summer barbecue on a propane grill – just remember to do it safely. NEVER grill indoors (including covered porches that vent into your home) with an outdoor grill: a lit outdoor grill emits carbon monoxide that can dangerously accumulate in an enclosed space.
  4. Know what to do if you smell propane – One of your most important responsibilities as the owner of a propane-powered home is to know what to do if you have a propane leak in your house. Know what to do to keep your family safe.
  5. Write an emergency preparedness plan and review it with your family – In the event of a power outage or some other kind of emergency, keep contact information for Downey Energy and emergency services (fire department, etc.) together with instructions for how to turn off propane, electricity, and water somewhere that can be accessed by your whole family. You can learn more about preparing for a power outage here).
